I hear that some Jaiswal community members are a little ashamed of their ancestral profession. The ancestors of the Jaiswal community were owners of liquor distilleries (sharab ki bhatti) and owned liquor retail outlets. The Jaiswal community was and is known for this fact. As this traditional business became less lucrative, Jaiswal community members took up other professional and non-professional businesses and they did this, they wanted to get away from the taboo associated with the taboo business. But the fact is that Jaiswal were owners of liquor distilleries and owned liquor retail outlets. Why should the Jaiswals be ashamed of this? We are what we are, there is no getting away from this fact. Instead, Jaiswals should be ashamed of some of the practices prevalent in today's Jaiswal community.
